Opportunities to choose from range from hands-on bird care to reception, administration, fundraising, running errands, gardening, and maintenance. Our volunteers help with almost every aspect of running the centre, and are greatly appreciated!
Prior experience with birds is not essential as we will provide training. It’s your availability, reliability, and willingness to help that really matter.

Board trustees needed
BirdCare Aotearoa is a registered charitable trust that provides professional care and rehabilitation for rescued wild birds, both native and non-native. We operate from a large site in Green Bay, Auckland, which includes an avian hospital and rehabilitation facilities, currently handling over 6,000 birds per annum. We also provide education and training for volunteers, professionals and the wider community. We operate on a relational basis. The centre is run by a small team of experienced professional staff assisted by a larger team of volunteers.
The Trust is governed by the Board of Trustees and due to two recent Board retirements we are looking for new trustees to join the existing four-person Board. The Trustees are responsible for the strategic oversight and governance needed to ensure the long-term success of BirdCare Aotearoa.
Board experience, including with not-for-profit organisations, is ideal but not essential and we welcome applications from people with a wide-range of employment backgrounds and skills. While a passion for New Zealand birdlife is useful, experience in animal/bird care and rehabilitation is not necessary.
Board members need to commit to attending monthly meetings in Green Bay, generally in person, and to fully contribute to Board discussions and initiatives. As such the role is only suitable for people who are based in the Auckland region.
