Information for donation receipts and invitations to events:

Friends of BirdCare Aotearoa recurring donors will receive one donation tax receipt at the end of the financial year (March).

For receiving receipts and invitations:

• Recurring donations by credit/debit card – email address will automatically be added to communications database.
• Recurring donations by bank transfer/automatic payment – please email admin@shop.birdcareaotearoa.org.nz to be added to communications database.

Existing recurring donors will automatically become a Friend of BirdCare Aotearoa and receive invitations.

BirdCare Aotearoa is a registered charity, registration no. CC37288, IRD no. 099-610-379. All donations over $5 are tax deductible.

BirdCare Aotearoa is entirely funded by the generosity of donations and grants. We are currently fundraising for $300,000 to upgrade the centre’s aviaries and facilities, to help recovering birds and fledgling chicks practice flying ahead of their release back into the wild.

These upgrades and additions to our facilities will also cater for increasing admissions, and provide additional quarantine capacity, ensuring we can continue giving life-saving care to rescued birds in the event of a major disease outbreak.

“Bird flu,” is caused by the H5N1 virus, which has been wreaking havoc across Asia and Europe, and has recently been detected on Subantarctic islands and the Antarctic mainland. The worry is that the avian flu could potentially enter the country through migratory birds such as bar-tailed godwits and red knots, which travel from the north or from Antarctica, where the virus was detected earlier this year.  The virus has a particular mutation, which appears to broaden its host species and geographic range. Further, internationally, ducks have proven to be a carrier for the disease, spreading it across different habitats and species.

The virus has shown devastating effects on wild bird populations globally and has even jumped to mammals, including cats, bears, and recently dairy cattle in Texas. Avian influenza primarily spreads among birds but can infect humans. While these viruses do not easily transmit from person to person, their presence in poultry poses concerns due to their potential to cause severe illness and mortality. If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds in a group, report it immediately to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66. Do not handle the birds.

Provide as much detail to Biosecurity New Zealand as you can, including:

• a GPS reading or other precise location information
• photographs and videos of sick and dead birds
• species identity and estimate of the numbers affected
• how many are sick or freshly dead, and the total number present.

Biosecurity New Zealand will take details and an investigator will contact you.

We are so grateful for the wonderful support – this will help to feed many hungry baby birds this summer!

BirdCare Aotearoa would like to thank sisters Scarlett (10) and Mila (7) who raised $510 from their fundraiser at St Joseph’s school in Orakei www.facebook.com/sjorakei

Scarlett and Mila sold chocolate chip cookies, lolly cakes and homemade lemonade. They love animals, and have also fundraised for the SPCA in the past.

St Joseph’s school is a little school with a very big heart, teachers and parents fully supported the initiative and were very impressed with Scarlett and Mila’s commitment.

The team at BirdCare Aotearoa are very grateful to these wonderful girls for their dedication and support of the care of precious wild birds. Their donation will help to feed a lot of hungry baby birds this summer!
